I’m so passionate about teacher happiness—keeping good teachers happy and in the classroom—because I’ve been that teacher that wanted to give up on what I thought was the perfect career.
I survived only four years in the classroom the first time. I love kids. I love teaching. But what I didn’t have after four years was my happy teacher self. I felt almost no joy and almost constant stress. So I gave up a classroom to be an instructional coach.
While I was away, I couldn’t just forget about what I remembered so clearly: how much I loved kids and how much I loved teaching. In the beginning. What had happened to me? My time out of the classroom gave me the time to figure it out. I put together a whole toolset of ideas and practices, from a wide variety of disciplines, that I was sure would enable me to stay focused and rewarded daily as a teacher.
I’m so glad I tried again. I’m back in the classroom and I’m my happy teacher self again. Every day is not unicorns and rainbows, but every day is deeply rewarding and sustains me as a teacher.
What I want for Being Teacher—this outlet– is to bring those ideas, techniques, and practices to EVERY teacher who wants fulfillment, peace, and joy in their lives and in their classroom.
I want to reverse the trend that the NEA reported recently, how only 84 percent of new teachers without mentors returned in their second year. And how almost a third of those new teachers after five years without a mentor are long gone from teaching.
So, if you are a new teacher, or if you know a new teacher: here’s how I’m going to work against that trend. Beginning this summer I will adopt and mentor three new teachers—from anywhere in the world–for the upcoming school year.
I will be coach and mentor for those three, and provide all the help I needed those years ago: all the techniques, inspiration, and tools I use everyday now. Since my vision for a powerful, healthy community of teachers worldwide includes all teachers—not just teachers who can afford the program, these three new teachers will receive what usually costs over two thousand dollars per client all completely free.
If you know a new teacher (new this current school year, or will be a first year teacher in the fall of 2017) or if you are a new teacher, the deadline to apply is March 20th. We will begin the program in June, with weekly sessions, and all materials (my online course, ebook manual, and monthly follow-up coaching throughout the school year) are free to you!
Here’s how to apply:
Then answer these questions:
- What are your strengths as a teacher?
- Why did you become a teacher?
- What is the biggest challenge you face in your classroom?
