I see Back to School Sales all around, so why are temperatures still soaring and pools still beckoning? In our school district we return to our classrooms in a few short days. Yikes!
We teachers face changes so much that we’re change masters. Yet we never experience as much change as at the beginning of a new school year.
Think about our bodies alone. We go from up-late-and-sleeping-in to getting up early and going to bed at a “decent” hour. We usually get less sleep when school starts. We also transition from fairly sedentary activities to being on our feet 6 hours of the day.
Plus, our days are no longer ruled by ourselves but by children, school districts, and administrators. The mental gymnastics our brains perform are astounding in comparison to “summer” brains. No wonder so many teachers feel a little anxiety as school begins!
Despite the change, many teachers embrace the new school year like an old friend. Are you one of those teachers? If not, that’s okay. We can learn from those that do.
New clothes. I remember the Sears catalogs we used to get in the mail this time of year full of Back to School clothes. I always loved looking through the plaid skirts and long knee socks.
Rachel, a 4th grade math teacher friend, buys new outfits for school every year. I also know Rachel is fashion model-styled every day, so new outfits for her make sense. Kenzey, on the other hand, buys just one first-day-of-school outfit because it “makes me feel like a kid again.”
Even if you don’t want several new outfits, you can splurge on one nice outfit for your first day of school. It doesn’t need to have apples on the lapels to be perfect for back to school. It just needs to be perfect for you.
New plan book. Almost all the teachers I know buy new planners for the school year. I used to make do with the school supplied boring-maroon planner, however, since I discovered Plum Paper planners, I’ll never settle again. You can custom design your own cover with your name on it.
Sara, a former teacher turned administrator, adds her own inspirational stickers throughout. There’s nothing more fun than starting the new year with a planner custom made for you!
Fall Lessons & Lists. Just thinking about fall lessons and decorations give me goose bumps. I love the smell of fall in the air and pictures of autumn leaves in the school hallways. A friend of mine makes a list before school starts of fall things she’s looking forward to, like football games, bonfires, and Halloween.
Even with new clothes, a new planner, and the new season, change masters can always use a little help. If you want more happy, download the free “Four Happy Teacher Habits” or check out “Welcome Back, Teacher!”
Change masters, we’ve got this!
