This morning as I was drying my hair I hit a moment of truth. Now, I often use a particular type of brush that heats and dries my hair faster. And I love how my hair looks when I use that particular brush. But despite all that, sometimes I either forget to use it or mistakenly feel like I don’t have enough time to use it.
That’s crazy thinking because it actually takes longer to dry my hair without it. And if my hair doesn’t look the best and takes even more time to style, what am I doing? I’m not a big on having “perfect” hair but I do like to just fix it and forget about it.
What I realized this morning is how being proactive is like that hairbrush. It’s the one tool I can use (and should use!) every single day to save me time and have everything turn out exactly how I want it.
Here’s the trick though to being proactive: You have to know what’s most important in most categories of your life.
What’s most important to me is almost certainly different than what is most important to you. At the top of my list is my family. (If my family is most important to you, too, please reconsider that.) So to put my family first truly, I have to consider my health, my happiness, and my home.
For example, if I spend time with my son but I’m grumpy, he’s going to remember an unhappy mom. What kind of role model is that? So, I spend time to cultivate my own happiness doing things that bring me joy.
If I’m tired because I ate donuts for breakfast, not only will I not have the energy to spend with him or my husband, I’ll be cranky to boot. Therefore, I eat my protein bar or shake for breakfast.
If the house is a terrible mess, it’s not enjoyable to look at or live in for any of us. So, I wash dishes, sweep, or wipe off the counters. In fact, the entire family makes keeping our home comfortable a priority.
Being proactive—or keeping first things first—makes everything better, just like my heated hairbrush. I know that from now on I’m going to use that brush—and always put first things first. I created a little freebie for you too—you can decide what comes first for you!
